Artist's Description
I started this watercolor at the busy Kanazawa Hakkei train station, from which I first saw the house. I moved to the alley in front of the house on my 2nd visit to finish the details. It was a wonderful surprise when I found out it was an open house day and was invited to see the house for myself including its old kiln. I walked in the garden and saw the tea ceremony which was in process on the tatami mats.
About Vera Smith
Dutch born, Vera Smith grew up in the Netherlands and France. As drawing was her favorite means of expression, she had art lessons starting at a young age from Elly Kuipers in Holland and Germain Bonel in France. In the US, she took classes from Edward Povey and Jim McDonald. She studied Russian in Europe. Her marriage brought her to the US, where she home schooled her children. In the States, Vera thoroughly enjoys Art Museums, the National and State Parks and Native American arts and crafts. What she loves about San Antonio, TX are the diverse cultural communities, the missions and other historic buildings. She paints in oils and watercolors mostly.
